McBride is Democrat of the Year
By Cathy Patton
Harold McBride is McDowell County’s 2006 Democrat of the Year. McBride, along
with his counterparts from throughout West Virginia, will be recognized this Saturday,
September 23, in Charleston during the premier Democrat Party event of the year, the
Annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner.
This year’s Jefferson Jackson Celebration will feature Sen. Robert Byrd and Illinois
Senator Barack Obama, a rising star in the Democrat Party.
The McDowell County Democrat Executive Committee recently bestowed the
Democrat of the Year award on McBride because of his continuing contributions to the
Democrat Party in McDowell County.
“Harold personifies all that’s good about the Democrat Party,” Executive Committee
Chairman Sen. John Fanning said. “He is a tireless worker for worthy causes and is
always willing to go the distance to promote the party platform. He is an asset to our
community and to the Executive Committee.”
“It is an honor to be selected for the award,” McBride said. “I didn’t expect it, but I
certainly appreciate it.”
In addition to serving on the CIAD and Solid Waste Authority Boards, McBride is
second vice chair of the Democrat Executive Committee. He is a member of the Welch
Lions Club, a Shriner and is a volunteer in a number of charitable events. During recent
months, McBride has played a Paradise Island pirate, a cowboy, has assisted with the
American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and the first ever Coal Miner’s Reunion.
Additionally, he is a volunteer in Welch’s annual Fall Festival and is a sponsor of
McDowell County Day in the Legislature. He is currently organizing a Masquerade Ball
to benefit the local animal shelter. The Masquerade Ball is slated for 7 p.m., October 21
at Mt. View High School.
“I encourage all my friends in both the Democrat and Republican parties to attend the
Masquerade Ball,” McBride said. “Proceeds from the Masquerade Ball will go to the
Humane Society.”
McBride is the son of “Red” and Polly McBride, and is the owner of McBride Electric.
He has one son, Wayne, and two grandchildren.
McBride and his wife, Vicky, reside in Welch.
