THE CLEAN UP BEGINS

Randall Patton and Ronald West are pictured Tuesday afternoon with the two truck loads of trash that they picked up in Roderfield on Route 7, Route 7/11 and around the Spratt Town Bridge, which is located near the cemetery. Four participants in the McDowell County Day Report Program assisted the volunteers. The volunteers worked for five hours, but didn’t complete the clean up.
“We made a dent in it, but there’s a lot more that we need to get,” Patton said. “We hope to go out again next week. We appreciate the helpers that the Day Report provided us. They did a good job and we appreciate their assistance.”
Patton, the newest member of the Solid Waste Board, noted that the official county clean up is slated April 10 - 12. During that time, litter may be dumped at the Copper Ridge Landfill in Capels for free. For information on what will be permitted to be dumped during the clean up, phone 436-6174.
Patton also reminds the public that the litter getters will arrive sometime around mid-April. The litter getters, he said, will travel throughout the county giving out tickets to all litterbugs.
“The county now has a zero tolerance policy in regard to litter. That’s why we’re giving everyone the chance to clean up now before the litter getters arrive,” he said.
Patton also reminds the litterbugs who trash the area beside the Spratt Town Bridge that they are being watched. “The Sheriff is working with us. If anyone even throws down a beer bottle will get a ticket,” he stressed.
West added that he’d be attending the public meeting on the ongoing county clean up this Thursday, April 3, 5 p.m. at the County Commission Conference Room. The Solid Waste Authority is hosting the meeting.

“I’ll be there add to add my support for the clean up effort and to talk to the railroad about their littering,” West said. “We encourage the public to participate in the meeting.” (Photo by Cathy Patton)
